Uniting the Poor of the US and the Poor of the World: PPEHRC's Call to Participate in
"A Day Without an Immigrant"

On Monday May 1st, the KWRU and the PPEHRC will be closing our office in Kensington in Philadelphia in honor of “The Great American Boycott: A Day Without an Immigrant.”

Currently several bills in the US House of Representatives and Senate call for criminalizing undocumented immigrants, making it a felony to be in the US illegally, and for the building of a wall along the US-Mexico border.

Meanwhile treaties such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), and policies of the World Trade Organization (WTO) allow companies to go anywhere in the world where they can pay people the least, provide the least safe working conditions, and deny our right to organize. These policies rob all of us, the poor of all races and national backgrounds, in the United States and worldwide, of our basic human rights to survival: the rights to jobs at living wages, health care, education, food, housing, heat and water. However at the same time that companies are allowed to travel worldwide, we, the poor across the world, are being criminalized for seeking a better future.

Proposed bills such as the Sensenbrenner-King Bill and the McCain-Kennedy Bill are about denying a section of the poor, immigrants of all national and racial backgrounds, basic human rights, and keeping us divided from each other by building walls and the like between us.

In the face of this, the PPEHRC is determined to step up our efforts to UNITE the poor of the US across racial and national lines, to bring together the poor, employed and unemployed, documented and undocumented. And to unite this movement of the poor of this country with the poor of the world in a struggle for “another world.”

In this effort, we have been participating in the growing movement across the country for basic human rights for undocumented workers. KWRU and PPEHRC joined in protests in Philadelphia on February 14th and April 10th, along with PPEHRC members across the country who joined in the National Day of Action on April 10th. On April 22, a member of PPEHRC’s (unpaid) staff traveled to Chicago for a National Planning Meeting for the May 1 "Day Without an Immigrant" activities and for the initiation of a national Coordinating Committee to coordinate this growing national, and international, movement for the human rights of undocumented workers. This meeting was held at the Chicago office of UNITE-HERE, the union of textile, hotel and restaurant workers with whom the PPEHRC works closely.

Following recent demonstrations which have brought out hundreds of thousands of people across the country, demonstrations which are estimated to have brought out a total of 3 million people nationwide (some of the largest demonstrations in recent US history), organizations of immigrants from across the US have called for May 1 to be a day of resistance. Demonstrations will be held across the United States, as well as around the world, and millions of people will be wearing white as a sign of support for the human rights of undocumented people.

In Philadelpiha, the KWRU and the PPEHRC will participate by closing our office, and by calling on our members, our supporters, and our children’s schools to wear white on that day. We encourage PPEHRC organizations and supporters around the country to join in this historic and important day, by 1) wearing white to work or school that day 2) by educating your membership, congregations, schools, etc, 3) by closing your offices if possible, or 4) by joining in demonstrations in your local area. Uniendo los Pobres de los Estados Unidos y los Pobres del Mundo: Llamado de PPEHRC a participar
en el Dia Sin un Inmigrante"

El lunes 1 de Mayo KWRU y PPEHRC cerrarán su oficina en Kensington en Philadelphia en honor de “El Gran Boicot Americano: Un Día Sin Inmigrantes.”

Actualmente hay varias leyes en la Casa de Representantes de EEUU y el Senado que quieren criminalizar a los inmigrantes indocumentados, convirtiendo en delito el permanecer en EEUU ilegalmente, y construir un muro a lo largo de la frontera EEUU-México. Mientras tanto, tratados como el Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC), el Área de Libre Comercio de las Américas (ALCA), y políticas del Organización Mundial de Comercio (OMC) permiten a las empresas privadas ir en donde quieran del mundo, donde puedan pagar lo menos posible y negarles los derechos a condiciones seguras y sanas, y el derecho a organizarse. Estas políticas nos roban a todos los pobres de todas razas y nacionalidades en los EEUU y del mundo de nuestros derechos humanos básicos a la supervivencia: los derechos a
trabajos con sueldos dignos, atención médica, educación, alimentación, vivienda, calefacción y agua. Sin embargo, mientras las compañías pueden viajar por todo el mundo, nosotros, los pobres del mundo, están tratados como criminales por buscar un futuro mejor.

Propuestas de ley como el Bill Sensenbrenner-King y el Bill McCain-Kennedy quieren negar un sector de los pobres - los inmigrantes de muchas razas y nacionalidades - los derechos humanos básicos, y mantenernos divididos entre nosotros, construyendo muros entre nosotros.

Ante eso, PPEHRC está decidido a poner más fuerzas en UNIR los pobres de EEUU atravesando las líneas de raza y nacionalidad para unir los pobres, empleados y desempleados, documentados y no documentados. Unir este movimiento de los pobres de este país con los pobres del mundo es una lucha para “un otro mundo.”

En este esfuerzo hemos estado participando en el movimiento creciente de este país por los derechos humanos básicos de los trabajadores indocumentados. KWRU y PPEHRC participaron en las manifestaciones en Philadelphia el 14 de Febrero y el 10 de Abril, junto con miembros de PPEHRC por todo el país quienes participaron en el Día Nacional de Acción el 10 de Abril. El 22 de Abril, un miembro de PPEHRC viajó a Chicago por una Reunión Nacional de Planificación por el "Día Sin Inmigrantes" que tendra lugar el 1 de mayo. Allí se acordaron sobre las actividades y el inicio de un Comité Nacional Coordinadora para coordinar este movimiento nacional e internacional por los derechos humanos de los trabajadores indocumentados. Esta reunión tomó lugar en la oficina en Chicago de UNITE-HERE, el sindicato de trabajadores de tela y de hotel y restaurantes con el cuál trabaja la PPEHRC.

En seguimiento las manifestaciones recientes que han sacado a la calle cientos de miles de personas por todo el país, manifestaciones en que el número estimado de personas participantes fue de 3 millones por todo el ancho y largo del país (unas de las manifestaciones más grandes de la historia reciente de EEUU), organizaciones de inmigrantes de todo el país están declarando que el 1 de Mayo será un día de No Trabajo, No Escuela, No Venta, No Compra. Habrán manifestaciones por todo el país y por otras partes del mundo donde millones de personas estarán vestidos de blanco como símbolo de apoyo a los derechos humanos de las personas indocumentadas.

No a las Vayas de las Fronteras y Racismo
No Más Persecución Policial a Inmigrantes

En Filadelfia, el KWRU y la PPEHRC cerraremos nuestras oficinas para participar y llamaremos a nuestros miembros, aliados, escuelas de nuestros hijos a vestirse de blanco ese día. Animamos a las organizaciones de PPEHRC y sus aliados por todo el país a juntarse en ese día importante e histórico a: 1) vestirse de blanco a la escuela o al trabajo ese día, 2) educar a los miembros de su organización, congregación, escuela etc., 3) cerrar sus oficinas si es posible, 4)
participar en las manifestaciones en su área.
